Message from the IACUC Chair: Documenting analgesic use in animals
October 28, 2009
Dear Colleagues:
In preparation for our upcoming AAALAC site visit this winter, the IACUC will be looking for documentation associated with the use of analgesics as listed in approved protocols. AAALAC has indicated that they expect some type of documentation that analgesics are provided as listed in the approved protocol. The type of documentation can range from a lab notebook for rodents to the individual medical record for a rabbit. At minimum, the information to be documented includes date administered, drug type, and the amount given. As the IACUC performs its semi-annual inspections of facilities in November and December, we will be checking for appropriate documentation of use of analgesics. We appreciate your efforts in helping us maintain a high quality animal care and use program worthy of accreditation by AAALAC.
